“I want to thank my three-year-old self, who believed she could slay her own dragons and knew she had it all to run the world. For she made me re-believe in myself and that’s how the game changed.”
The strongest woman I know, my mother, raised me feeding into my head that I was a self-sufficient, resilient girl who could conquer anything in this big bad world by keeping in mind the virtues she had taught me.
During my childhood, I often ignored what the naysayers had to say about me, about my corpulence. But in my early teens, I hit the rock bottom. I was a victim of severe body shaming and cyber-bullying, which took a drastic toll on my mental health. I was devastated, not only because of what was happening to me but also seeing myself going from a confident, mature and clear in the head person to someone with crippled self-esteem, who failed in her own eyes.
I wanted to give back, really bad. But I knew it wasn’t really “Ladylike” to throw back the stones aimed at you. So to change the game, I changed who I was. But, not in the way you just thought I did! I remembered who I was, and that changed the game for me.
Firstly, I knew some internal work had to be done, to get my authentic self back. So, I got spiritually inclined, I started believing in the Universe, which assured the plot twist in my story.
Secondly, I decluttered all the negativity from my life, be it toxic people or toxic habits. Thirdly, I started pursuing what my heart beats for; for I knew it was my sole purpose in life, DANCE.
At age 16, I started off by teaching young kiddos and that’s when one of my students’ parents saw the potential in me and gave me their event to choreograph. This got me numerous referrals. And since then, there has been no looking back!
I cannot explain my happiness when I received my first wedding invitation labeled as “To, Choreographer Diksha Adnani.” Being associated with students aged from 3 to 75, taught me lessons of a lifetime. It felt like it was a whole new world wherein there was so much to see, and so much to be.
The feeling of people acknowledging and appreciating your creativity, your brainchild and encouraging young talent is ineffable. All the love, the bond, the memories created with my clientele families is a jackpot of happiness, something I’d cherish for my entire lifetime.
From facing many rejections to being selected as a choreographer for a production house at age 17.
From being told that beauty contest wasn’t my thing to clinching the Bombay Times Fresh Face title in college. The journey has been inexplicably heartwarming.
Hence, in the last year of my teenage, I want to thank my 3-year-old self, who believed she could slay her own dragons and knew she had it all to run the world, for she made me re-believe in myself and that’s how the game changed.
